The beginning
COUNTDOWN 5
A Grand Entrance on Galveston Beach
There was magic in the air on a spring night in 1964 when the Countdown Five made an entrance no one in Galveston would soon forget.
Arriving in a borrowed funeral home limousine, the band showcased its trademark flair by asking the driver to steer straight through the crowd and deliver them directly to the stage at Menard Park Pavilion. It was pure showmanship—and the audience loved every second of it.
A Rock-and-Roll Coronation
As the limousine rolled in, the excitement reached a fever pitch. Their college friend, K-ILE disc jockey Bill Segal, whipped the crowd into a frenzy with an introduction worthy of rock royalty. For a few unforgettable moments, the Countdown Five weren't just a local band—they were stars.
The Beginning of Something Special
Members of the group still talk about that brief moment in time when they first felt the overwhelming affection of their earliest fans. Those hometown crowds gathered along Galveston beach embraced the band with an enthusiasm that would stay with them forever.
Seven Years on the Road
The Countdown Five would spend the next seven years touring throughout the South, experiencing many more memorable nights and basking in the excitement of devoted audiences. Yet this photograph captures something unique—the very beginning of the journey, when youthful ambition, hometown pride, and a little rock-and-roll magic came together on a spring evening by the sea.
